Seeking Immortality under the Pines, 2025

[Exhibited by Sild Road Virtual Museum ]

Since the Han Dynasty, the Silk Road carried not only silk and spices but also stories and symbols that reflected humanity’s shared concerns about life, death, and the cosmos. This artwork draws on that legacy, blending mythical and natural elements to evoke immortality and longevity.
The pine trees, like the cosmic tree found in myths worldwide, connect heaven, earth, and the underworld. They echo Kan’ami’s Noh play Matsukaze, symbolizing eternal love. Cranes soar above, embodying harmony and immortality, while a turtle rests by the waves, representing wisdom and longevity. At the center, peaches evoke the mythical fruit of Kun Lun’s peach tree, said to grant eternal life only once every 3,000 years. [...]
